Wat Rong Khun - White Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
To get a people-free shot of the White Temple in Chiang Rai, follow these tips!
⚠️⚠️⚠️If the sun is out, don't forget to wear sunglasses, or you might get blinded by the brightness.
🛕White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)
The White Temple, also known as Wat Rong Khun, was funded and designed by the famous Thai architect (and former painter) Chalermchai Kositpipat. The modern temple is decorated with fragments of mirrors on its pure white exterior, shining under the sun.
The White Temple is not exactly a religious place, as you can even see various cartoon and sci-fi characters in the murals. However, you should still respect the local religious customs and avoid dressing too revealingly.
When you arrive at the White Temple, you might feel like you're traveling in China, with numerous tour groups entering. Staff members with loudspeakers will remind you not to linger at the entrance bridge.
Yes, the White Temple looks like heaven, but the entrance is like hell. Don't look back when you cross the bridge!
The toilet in the White Temple is all gold, aptly named the Golden Toilet. It's probably the most photographed toilet.
🛕Photography tips
Among the three famous buildings in Chiang Rai, the White Temple and the Black Temple are the most beautiful in my opinion. The Blue Temple is too 'cartoonish'.
It's really hard to take photos on the bridge when it's crowded. If you want a wide shot, it's possible from the stairs closest to the exit.
You can use decorations to block tourists at the corners.
The terrace connecting the two main halls is a good spot for people-free background shots from either side.
The open space on the side of the White Temple is also not crowded.

#thingstodo
Pretty astonishing architectural monuments.
It is just outside of Chiang Rai, but probably one of the must-sees in comparison to some other temples.
You have to dress politely as usual and pay
100 Baht per person, which is absolutely fine. It is a bigger place with several buildings (not just the temple itself). Great to walkt through, recharge a little bit, before the next trip starts.
Additionally there is a chance for additional trips / exhibitions for an extra charge, but we did not went through those add-ons.
The unique beauty, the whiteness and the delicate architecture make it a stunning temple to see. It is one of the most beautiful temple | have seen in Thailand. It gives you the feeling of being in a wonderland;
Depending on the angle and how it shines, it looks like it is made of ice, lace, glass or porcelain, it is really one of a kind temple.
The temple is outside the town of Chiang Rai. For travellers without a car rental or a prebooked tour, you can just hire a taxi from Chiang Rai, it is not expensive.
Possibly one of the most stunning temples you will ever see. It glistens and sparkles white all day. Parts of it were restricted when I visited but this isn't all the time and it doesn't really take away from the views.
The surrounding lake is full of healthy fish and the gardens are well kept.
Various shops and, surprisingly, inexpensive restaurants line one side of the temple grounds.
100B as a tourist will get you into the temple grounds including a buddhist cave installation, an art gallery and an exhibition hall with various bits of history to study. Also a gift shop. A little map is provided on the back of your ticket and the toilets are also sparkly.
Dress appropriately and shield yourself from sun in open areas. it gets mighty hot in low season. Get there early if you want less people in your photos.

Baan Dam Museum Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Baan Dam Museum
An art based museum. It shows the local architecture of the region, and with some interesting 3D art using augmented reality. However it wasn't working for us when we're there, even though there is free WiFi. Otherwise, there are nice buildings showing local traditional buildings, and the culture of crocodile skinning. There isn't much to do, but still nice to look.

Baan Dam, also known as the Black House, is an art museum located in Chiang Rai, Thailand. It was created by the Thai artist Thawan Duchanee, who passed away in 2014. The museum consists of several buildings and outdoor spaces that showcase Thawan's unique art style, which is a fusion of traditional Thai art with modern and contemporary elements.
The museum is known for its dark, ominous atmosphere, with many of the buildings painted black and decorated with various animal bones and skins, as well as eerie sculptures and paintings. Thawan's art often features themes of death, rebirth, and the cycle of life, and he drew inspiration from Buddhism and Thai folklore.
Visitors to Baan Dam can explore the various buildings and outdoor spaces, which feature sculptures, paintings, and other artworks by Thawan and other artists. There are also demonstrations of traditional Thai crafts such as weaving and pottery-making.
Freely go to Chiang Mai in Thailand.
Chiang Mai is a foreign city that is particularly suitable for independent travel. The travel services on Ctrip are comprehensive, with airport pick-up and drop-off services for only 10-30 RMB, half-day tours to "Doi Suthep Temple" and "Bhubing Palace", family-friendly activities such as "Mae Wang Elephant Camp" and "Night Safari", and the most recommended one-day tour to the White Temple and Black Temple in Chiang Rai. On the day of departure, there will be a special car to pick up and drop off at the hotel. Even if your English is poor, there will be a Chinese tour guide accompanying you throughout the journey. I chose to depart on Friday because as a foodie, I didn't want to miss the most famous Saturday and Sunday night markets in Chiang Mai, where there are various cheap and delicious snacks and exquisite handmade products for sale. Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand. It not only has a leisurely pace, but also is full of ancient and profound cultural heritage. You can walk around in slippers on the streets and alleys, and if you get tired, you only need to take a tuk-tuk or songthaew for 20 baht (5 RMB) as transportation.
Strolling through any street or alley in the ancient city of Chiang Mai, you can encounter magnificent or peaceful Buddhist temples. This small city with a population of 500,000 surprisingly has over 300 temples of all sizes, and you may get confused. However, there are several particularly famous temples that you must visit.
The first "Wat Phra Singh". It is the largest Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, built in the 14th century, and is a perfect example of Lanna-style architecture. The first thing that catches your eye when entering the temple is the glittering golden Buddha statue, and the murals in the hall depict the ancient local costumes and customs. In the center of the temple is a 20-meter golden white tower, which is a strong representative style of Thai temples.
The second "Qidilong Temple", also known as the Big Buddha Temple, is decorated with snakes and peacocks at the temple gate. There is a huge Buddha statue in the main hall, and the sense of space and the golden decorations inside the temple are very magnificent and exquisite. Along the path to the back square, there is a big Buddha pagoda. Although the ancient pagoda has been weathered by time and earthquakes, it appears majestic and magnificent under the reflection of the golden lotus flowers, with a simple and rustic charm.
The third "Wat Chiang Man", the first temple in Chiang Mai, was built in 1300 and is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai. The best building in the temple is the stupa of the main temple, which is surrounded by 15 elephants at the base, giving it a simple and vicissitudinous appearance that contrasts sharply with the dazzling golden elephant spire.
Not far from the city, the "Double Dragon Temple" on the Suthep Mountain, also known as the Suthep Temple, is named after two long dragons sitting and lying on both sides of the steps. It is a famous Buddhist summer resort in Thailand. The Thai royal summer palace is also built on Suthep Mountain. The Phuping Palace can be opened to the public when the royal family is not there from April to December. The palace has beautiful white walls and yellow tiles, and is located in the green mountains and trees, with its own beauty of coolness and peace.
The two breathtaking temples in Chiang Rai, the White Temple and the Black Temple, are the highlights of a trip to Chiang Mai. The White Temple was built by designer Cheler Mchai at his own expense and was first established in 1997. The entire complex is pure white and lustrous, with only small pieces of polished glass as borders or decorations, which is quite different from the usual temples. The details, such as the flying birds on the eaves, the standing statues on the roof, the reclining turtles on the pillars, and the flowing clouds on the flags, all reflect the exquisite and delicate design, which is a masterpiece of art. The White Temple tells the story of how one can reach the Buddhist paradise by crossing the Naihe Bridge and avoiding the temptation of hell with a single-minded focus. Next to the White Temple is a "glittering" golden building, which is actually a toilet and is probably the most beautiful toilet in the world.
The Black Temple is located in a forest of lush grass, consisting of many intricately constructed Thai temples made of original logs. The theme of the Black Temple is hell and death, with water buffalo skulls lined up on the ground, animal skins and large shells on the table, and a complete elephant skeleton and dried snake specimens on display. The creator, Mr. Thawan Duchanee, spent 36 years gradually designing and building this huge open-air, garden-style private art museum. His disciple and friend, a Buddhist artist, was inspired by him to create the still unfinished White Temple.
In Chiang Mai, magnificent temples can be seen everywhere, filled with the mysterious charm of Eastern Buddhist culture. With cheap prices and convenient transportation, it is definitely a perfect place for you to temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and people you see with your eyes open or closed, and let yourself fly. Take some beautiful photos that will make you want to cry and savor them slowly.

Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Discovering Chiang Rai’s Blue Temple
🔷✨ The Blue Temple in Chiang Rai is a mesmerizing oasis of tranquility and spiritual splendor. As I crossed the threshold of this architectural gem, I was immediately captivated by the ethereal blue hues that adorned every intricate detail, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
The exterior, adorned with delicate carvings and shimmering blue mosaic tiles, set the tone for the celestial beauty that awaited within. The temple's design seamlessly blends traditional Thai and contemporary artistic elements, creating a sanctuary that feels both timeless and modern.
Stepping into the main hall, I was greeted by the resplendent sight of a majestic white Buddha bathed in a soft, celestial blue glow. The interplay of light and color created an aura of serenity, inviting contemplation and inner peace. The walls adorned with vibrant murals depicting celestial scenes added to the temple's allure.
The meticulous attention to detail extended to the surrounding structures, including the library and prayer halls. Each element, from the ornate windows to the intricately carved dragons guarding the entrance, spoke to the dedication and craftsmanship that went into creating this sacred space.
The courtyard, adorned with sculptures and lush greenery, provided a peaceful setting for reflection. As sunlight filtered through the blue-tinted windows, it cast a gentle glow, enhancing the spiritual ambiance of the entire temple complex.
Climbing the stairs to the elevated terrace offered a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, with the temple's blue and gold facade contrasting against the clear skies. It was a moment of pure awe, a visual symphony that celebrated both the earthly and the divine.
Leaving the Blue Temple, I carried with me a profound sense of tranquility and wonder. This sacred haven is not just a monument; it's a testament to the harmonious intersection of art, spirituality, and nature. A visit here is not just a sightseeing experience; it's a soul-stirring journey #thailand #chiangmai into the sublime. 🔷🌸🙏 #tripstars

Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple)
Wat Rong Suea Ten – more commonly known as the “Blue Temple” – in Chiang Rai is a place of worship that has an ordination hall, a pagoda, statues and more in every shade of blue imaginable.
The main ordination hall at Wat Rong Suea Ten is protected by two large naga that are painted in vibrant shades of blue, gold, and purple.
In addition to the temple’s unique colouring, visitors can also appreciate the consistency and symmetry that comes with Wat Rong Suea Ten’s design.
Wat Rong Suea Ten is a less-crowded and equally-beautiful alternative to the White Temple in Chiang Rai.

Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple)
Another architectural marvel here is Chiang Rai. Beautiful structure and outstanding craftsmanship say it all. I was super impressed with the dragons guarding the main temple.
The area is smaller compared to the White Temple, but it’s good to come early if you want to avoid the crowd. We reached early morning and were happy (peacefully got the pictures).
And please do try the ice cream with pea-flower sticky rice, served at the shops adjacent to the temple.

I would be heartbroken if anyone missed this hotel in Chiang Mai.
Internet-famous hotel "The Inside House"
Located in the ancient city, with a 711 at the doorstep.
Small hotels are full of details, every corner is a photo opportunity. If you come to Chiang Mai and don't stay here for a night, I will be sad.
Failed to book a room with a pool, but I will come back next time!
Upon check-in, a welcome drink is provided. The hotel has prepared fruits and desserts in the room. From 1pm to 5pm, there are complimentary drinks and fixed desserts for afternoon tea.
At night, there will be a goodnight dessert on the bedside table, which is really thoughtful.
In the bathroom, there are lipsticks, nail clippers, and even a curling iron.
The fruits in the room are updated every day, and there are also flowers and orchids decorating the minibar in the cabinet, all of which are free.
Every corner is full of Moroccan style, white buildings wrapped in green plants, perfectly designed.
The only downside is that the scent in the hotel is all almond flavor, and I hate almond flavor.
