You know it's a great travel experience when you arrive back home and still catch yourself thinking, at multiple times during the workday: "Wonder what everyone at Ray Caye is up to today?" Our family is lucky to travel extensively (Belize was the 17th country my 4 year old has visited), I am not really a "resort" person...and still, Ray Caye was one of our TOP family travel experiences ever. There are a lot of beach resorts in Belize (I researched most of them, as it was important for me to find the right fit) and Ray Caye stands way out from the pack. Everything was just right. The transfer (plane to shuttle to boat, and back again) was easy and smooth. The island's beauty speaks for itself, it is surreal - it is not often that the real thing looks better than the Instagram account! The team is wonderful - everyone is kind and helpful without feeling fake, forced or cheesy. Kids are definitely welcome - my little one still asks about helpers like Candido, Melvin, Jose, and Franklin. The days are lovely and laidback, and we felt immediately at home. There are plenty of little beaches to explore and shells to gather, a gorgeous outdoor pavilion for meals, and a fabulous secluded swimming pool just for guests. We loved watching the pelicans dive during the day and the rays and fish swim on the long dock at night. Excursions were tailored so that everyone in the family could enjoy (for example, we rode on a Hobie to a small sandbar where my husband and I could snorkel, but my little one could still stand in the water, and see fish). The food is excellent, too - I was happy to see some departures from dumbed-down Western resort fare including local ingredients like lion fish. The Ray Caye community has created a very special vibe that I've rarely experienced in a resort setting (we also stayed at a long-established "rainforest" lodge on this trip and dare I say that Ray Caye's level of service and a**osphere was even better, more personal and welcoming!). We are so thankful to the Ray Caye team for memories we will never forget, and are already plotting which of our friends we can trick into footing the bill for a whole island for us next time.
